One of our main focus areas at OpenMIND is prevention, particularly amongst children and young adults where we focus on establishing healthy habits for the community in Minot, ND. If you’re an educator take a look at these great mental health resources for teachers – designed to help with stress relief and developing healthy mental habits in your own life and in the lives of the kids around you.
We’re very interested in natural ways to prevent and reduce issues associated with mental health. We believe there are three pillars of mindfulness to focus on to improve your mental well-being: Diet, Exercise, and Connection.

ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE | THE POSITIVE EFFECT OF LIFESTYLE & DIET CHANGES
Dale Bredesen, Augustus Rose Professor of Neurology, Director of the Easton Center at UCLA, professor at Buck Institute, has found that critical lifestyle and diet changes can have a positive effects on Alzheimer’s patients.
Science Daily outlined an example of some of these changes (though Bredesen’s approach was personalized for each patient). These included
- Eliminating all simple carbohydrates and gluten
- Stop eating processed food
- Consuming more vegetables and fruits
- Eating wild-caught fish
- Meditating twice a day
- Starting yoga
- Increasing sleep to between seven and eight hours each night
- Daily supplementation of coenzyme Q10, fish oil, melatonin, methylcobalamin, and vitamin D3
- Improving oral hygiene by introducing an electric flossing tool and an electric toothbrush
- Reinstating hormone replacement therapy as needed
- Fasting for a minimum of 12 hours between dinner and breakfast
- Not eating at least three hours before bedtime
- Exercising for at least 30 minutes, up to six days each week
